Increasing Self Esteem Through Pampering

The interpretation for the expression "self indulgent" is often a negative one, as in "thinking of nobody else" or "doing something solely for pleasure when there are other things to be done". And while the former is not necessarily true, the latter is, but there are benefits to doing something purely for pleasure, that not only come to the person doing the indulging, but to those around them as well.

People today find it hard to indulge themselves in the things they like, or the little extras that would constitute pampering themselves. We are a society that is constantly running on our reserves of energy, both mental and physical. When that goes on too long, exhaustion sets in, and with that we become open to stresses that we might have been able to fight off, had we been more alert, or in the condition to consider how best to deal with our problems. As a result, we may become obsessive about our jobs, our looks, and our place in society, all from a perspective of not being good enough because we can't control or handle the stress in our lives.

That is where a little self-indulgence or pampering, can be the key to turning things around, especially if practiced before things get out of hand. Afterwards, it is more difficult to get one's self to accept that they deserve this, and that it should take priority over lesser things.

For example, a day at the spa may seem wickedly sinful. And expensive. But there is a purpose to everything they do there, and if you are under stress, many of the treatments will help you to release it. Massages will not only provide physical benefits to the body, but will relax the mind as well, and in combination with aromatherapy, can induce a state of mind where you are able to view things more clearly, and consider them from every angle, without the pressure of doing it now, doing it right, etc. Other treatments designed to condition and enhance the physical appearance, including make-up and even hair-styling, will reinforce that boost to your self esteem that you get from feeling good, and now, knowing that you look good as well. You have gained both confidence in your decision making, and confidence in your appearance.

So go ahead...indulge. It's good for you, and when you're feeling good, those around you will share in the benefits.
